Social Gift Giving Etiquette • An effective gift is one that someone will enjoy! If I really like the gift, then I buy it for someone else. • A gift can communicate power, knowledge, interest and sophistication. • We give gifts generally for obligatory and/ or regulated holidays. • Keep in mind that gifts don’t have to be expensive. It really is the thought that counts! • Do your homework about the receiver. Be observant about their favorite items, or things that are expressive of your relationship. If need be, ask someone who knows them to help select the most special gift possible. • Use simple and elegant wrapping. Less is more. • Nice, simple gifts are picture books, music and stationery (for thank you notes!). • Don’t be offended if the receiver does not wish to open the gift in front of you. If some people at say a birthday don’t bring gifts, the receiver may feel unconformable.
