Business Gift Giving Etiquette

•   An effective gift is one that ties in with your business, product or sponsored event.

•   The gift can enhance or harm a business image.  It can communicate power, knowledge, interest and sophistication.

•   Today's corporate and public sector arenas increasingly demand more international and social sophistication from their managers.

•   Each culture has its time honored rules of etiquette regarding gifts.  International gift giving requires research into each culture of the person who will be the recipient of the gift.

•   Keep in mind that gifts don’t have to be expensive but should reflect your company mantra in someway.

•   Engraving and logos are always nice as long as they’re not the focal point.

•   Again, each company will have clear guidelines about their image and what they expect to accomplish with business gifts.

•   Do your homework about the receiver.  Be observant about their favorite items or things that are expressive of your relationship.  If need be, ask someone who knows them to help select the most special gift possible.

•   Be sensitive to cultural differences.

•   Use simple and elegant wrapping.  Less is more.

•   Be sensitive to others not opening gifts in front of you.  In America, we often open gifts when received in front of large groups (parties, showers) but that is not always the case in other countries.
