Origin of Flatware • Experts believe that knives and forks first became popular in the early 17th Century. It was only later that the 'upper classes' in Europe began using what is now referred to as Continental Style. • When cutlery was first introduced, it was made of silver and gold. Nobleman and their families had their own knives and forks which they carried with them wherever they went. • They cleaned their own utensils after dining at neighboring castles.
