Finger Bowl Etiquette • At a formal dessert service, a waiter will bring each guest a bowl filled with water. It is known as the finger bowl. • The bowl is set on a doily to protect the plate which will be used for dessert. The bowl will also have a dessert fork to the left and dessert spoon to the right. • First remove the fork and place to the left of your plate with the bowl. Do the same thing for the spoon and place to the right. • One hand at a time, dip the tips only of the fingers in the bowl. Wipe the tips dry with the napkin on your lap so no one sees this taking place. Repeat with the other hand. • Remove the bowl with doily and place to the left of your plate for the waiter to remove it. (The bowl is placed on the left side as the coffee cup will be on your right side). • The clean and empty plate is now ready to receive dessert.
