Dress Etiquette It's very important to wear clothes that are appropriate and reflect the occasion. It's a great insult to appear casually dressed when a host has made a great effort to put on an elegant party for you and other guests. Plus, it can be embarrassing for you both. If an invitation does not specify dress, you have every right to ask when you respond to the invitation. Please keep in mind that there are considerable variations all over the world as to dress etiquette. The rule is that its better to be over dressed than under dressed. Lastly, men and women should take the time to discuss and coordinate outfits so they will compliment one another and not look like The Odd Couple! Let's talk about the different types of dress for occasions: Casual, Informal, Formal Casual Men: Khakis and polo shirts (not shorts or ripped t-shirts) Women: casual skirts and dresses, polo shirts and cotton blouses Informal Men: Dark suits; Ties; Slacks; Sport Coats and Shirts Women: Dressy skirt and silk blouse; Cocktail dress; Pant suits Black Tie Formal Men: Black Tie Tuxedos or white dinner jacket (summer only) Women: Long or short evening dress (yes, short is ok) White Tie Most Formal Men: White Tie (full evening dress), black tail coat, white dinner jacket (summer only) or a military uniform Women: Floor length evening dress (gloves optional)
