Table Mistakes: Do's & Don'ts Do take small portions when serving yourself. Do wait until everyone is seated at your table to begin eating or until everyone's food has been served (unless your host says to begin eating). Do put your napkin in your lap as soon as you are seated. No exception! Do tuck your necktie in between your 2nd& 3rd shirt buttons, men only. Do try a little bit of everything to be polite unless you have certain food allergies. Do keep dinner conversation pleasant. Do always pass food to the right. Do always clear food to the left. Do wait until you have swallowed a bite until you take a sip of water. Do remember your posture at the table. Straight vs. Slumped. Don't wave utensils around while eating or you'll injure your neighbor. Don't let your elbows fly like a butterfly. Don't stuff your face; small bites only please! Theres always seconds. Don't chew with your mouth open. Don't talk with your mouth full. Do remember that salt and pepper travel together. Dont salt and pepper your food until you have taken a bite. Don't mix food on your plate unless it's meant to go together, like stew! Don't reach across the table to get something. Ask for it to be passed, or ask a waiter for assistance. Don't pick or floss your teeth in public. Don't lean back in your chair. Don't pick up a utensil from the floor; ask a waiter to do it for you. Don't speak in a loud voice at the table. Don't push your plate away; wait until it is cleared by the waiter. Don't get up from the table at the end of a meal until your host rises.
