Celebrity Etiquette • A ‘chance’ encounter with a celebrity can leave anyone speechless, especially if you live in Los Angeles or New York City. If this happens, how should you behave? • Respect their privacy. Just because they’re on your favorite television program or in a major motion picture, that does not give you free reign to hound them for their signature or photograph. Think Princess Diana :-( • If they are with their families and clearly do not wish to be disturbed, show restraint and keep your distance. • If you do meet them, always air on the side of formality and use honorifics such as Mr. or Mrs., as in Mr. Robert Redford or Mrs. Elizabeth Taylor. • Actors you meet in public are not their characters. (Thank goodness! Can you imagine anything worse than a real Dr. House?) Go back to watching your favorite soap opera for real drama. • Avoid asking celebrities for special favors such as can I be an extra on your program or have a lock of your hair to sell on eBay? • If you are lucky enough to meet one of your idols, this is not the time to be a wallflower. Shake hands, use good eye contact even if the meeting is brief. Without being too personal, try saying this: “I am a huge fan, Mr. Redford, and I love what you have done with the new Sundance Kabuki Cinema in San Francisco.” • Never approach the child of a celebrity on your own. Most have security guards to protect them and with good reason! • If you meet a celebrity on the job, be professional at all times. • Think the Golden Rule. Don’t treat anybody except the way you would wish to be treated.
